History of Emmaus

Emmaus, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1740 by a group of Moravian settlers led by Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf. The settlers, originally from Europe, established the town as a religious community with the intention of creating a place for worship and fellowship. The name "Emmaus" was chosen from the biblical village of Emmaus, symbolizing the community's religious foundation. Initially, the Moravians used Emmaus as a base for their missionary work, and it served as a key part of the Moravian settlement network in Pennsylvania.

The community began as a small agricultural settlement, with the Moravians building homes, a church, and other structures in the area. Over time, Emmaus grew, transitioning from a religious enclave to a thriving town, with local industries such as milling, farming, and eventually manufacturing playing a significant role in its development. Despite the borough's growth, it has retained a connection to its Moravian roots, with several historic buildings, such as the Emmaus Moravian Church, still standing today as reminders of its early beginnings.

Through the years, Emmaus has evolved from its religious and agricultural roots into a modern suburban community, but the town’s rich history remains an important part of its identity.
